Hairy Highland Cows

I do love a gorgeous, shaggy Highland Cow, and it seems like I’m not the only one!

I made these cute Highland Cows with over 200 children at a recent event and they were super popular (there were even a few adults that wanted to make them!).

If you would like to make one, just follow the steps below. I’ll include a free printable template at the bottom of the page to help you get the shapes right.

  1. Start by cutting the main head shape out. You could draw round the template onto brown card or, if you don’t have any brown card, you could always cut it out using white card and colour or paint it. At the moment it will look a little like a pineapple but don’t worry, we’re about to fix that!

  1. Fold the top section forwards, along the dashed line (shown on the template). This is now the cow’s fringe and should hang down over its face.

  1. Cut the cow’s nose out. I used peach coloured paper but again, you could colour or paint it if you only have white. Don’t forget to draw on a mouth, depending on what “mooooood” your cow is in! Stick the nose on the bottom section of the face.

  2. Now you can add some eyes. I have provided some on the template. Alternatively, you could design some of your own, for example, maybe you would prefer your cow to have sleepy eyes. I glued mine onto the face so they were partially covered by the brown fringe.

5. Cut the horns out of white card, then turn the cow's face over and stick them on the back, at the top. I used double sided tape but glue would work just as well. If you would like your cow to be a hanging decoration, then this is a good place to put some string, as the horns will help hold it in place.

  1. If you would like to make your cow look extra hairy, just glue some wool onto the fringe!

There you have it - your very own Highland Cow! If you would like to download and print the template, just click on the link at the bottom of the page.

You could even make a few and turn them into bunting or add them to paper bags to make party bags…perfect for a farm themed birthday party!
